COMPOUNDING The quick removal of scratches or the removal of paint off a car by using a compounding pad and a liquid compound. Liquid compound is a form of liquid sandpaper and like sandpaper comes in different grits. A wool or foam compounding / buffing pad with your favorite liquid compound is recommended.
BUFFING The removal of a thin layer of dull paint created by oxidization, or where the paint has been sprayed onto a car unevenly leaving bumps or ridges on the surface. The paint has to be smoothed or rubbed out by using a liquid compound and a buffing pad. It will put a light shine on the car. Make certain that you use a light grit liquid compound so that you do not remove too thick of a layer of paint off the cars finish. The biggest problem with buffing is the creation of heat. This can happen easily with a high speed machine. Professionals will tell you not to put pressure onto the machine while buffing. Pressure generates heat and with a clear-coat finish can cause the two layers of paint to separate and ruining the paint job. A wool or foam compounding / buffing pad with your favorite liquid compound is recommended.
